This year we have decided to school Owen at home. We had been thinking about this since December and started on Aug 7th. We have loved loved loved what it has done for Owen and our family. Scott now stays home with the boys and functions as a "Learning Coach" through the virtual academy we are using. This program sends us curriculum and we log time and organize our schedule online. We are loving the flexibility and the one on one teaching that Owen gets. It is also awesome to have Scott home more than ever!! We are enjoying all this time together! Every week Owen comes and takes an art class at my school with our Pre-K blended class and then he reads to a classroom of 1st graders that really enjoy his attention. My schedule is perfect for this set up as well. I work 7:30-3:15 and so I am able to teach some when I get home. The transition has been easier as we get use to all the ins and outs of the program- we have also been assigned a certified teacher and she has been so wonderful. Owen requires information everyday every moment it seems so the teaching is something we have been doing anyway. The program is nice in that it helps keep us organized and allows us to expose him to things that maybe we would not have on our own. We love it!
Below is Owen's first assignment that we had to send in....
They wanted to see Owen's starting point asking him to draw a picture and write a few sentences about it without any help.
This is about the dolphin show we saw in Atlanta. In his drawing he labeled people in their seats, the spotlight, splashes and, the curtain on the side of the stage. The arrows in his writing are because he was trying to use the insert (^) symbol. We will have an on-line conference with the teacher on Wednesday about this assignment and his other work so far.
